Countdown to Halloween - Oct. 1st: Martha Stewart Oct 2010 Issue

The October 2010 issue of Martha Stewart Living is out and features 2 covers--the one pictured above is on stands, another with a more autumnal than Halloween look was mailed to subscribers. I really like the Halloween cover with the cute little jack o' lanterns.

Halloween goodies this issue include:

Tags made with pressed leaves cut out in the shape of jack o' lanterns, a snake covered wreath, "hag o' lanterns" using green squashes, clever pumpkin carving--love the witch design, an article on specimens for a Halloween theme--love the butterflies and fossils.

There is an article on hauntings in New England too.

Vintage Halloween Tea Set at eBay

Selling for just over 900.00 today at eBay is such a cute little tea set! Very collectible and very pricey. This set for sale included just the one teacup and saucer. I'd love to own this set.

Vintage Halloween Diecuts #1

I recently saw this cute vintage Halloween diecut at eBay featuring a squirrel, owl and moon. Love it. According to Mark Ledenbach in his Vintage Halloween Collectibles guide, the earlier versions of this particular diecut from Beistle, are more embossed--deeper and more refined than later versions which are more flat.

Halloween in America - 2nd edition

I noticed recently that Stuart Schneider's Halloween in America is being updated and a new revised edition will be coming out this November. You can purchase it online at Amazon or Barnes and Noble. His current edition was the first collectibles guide I purchased back in the day on vintage Halloween collectibles--I believe I saw a reference to it in one of Martha' Stewart Living's October issues in an article on vintage collectibles.

World Market Halloween Goodies

This weekend I went shopping for new finds and stopped in at World Market. They have a nice array of Halloween items, some with vintage flair! I purchased the neat lantern/treat bucket above and also some of these paper pails below which feature some vintage postcard imagery and their fun silhouettes design this year:

Lots of neat party ware like plates and napkins with the silhouettes too. Here's a photo I snapped with my not so fabulous camera phone:

I also stopped by Pier One and they had some neat items out and quite a few ornaments. Target was barely putting out any of their items and hadn't gotten past the costumes so I'll have to return there for a peek later this week.

Vintage Halloween Books

I like to collect vintage Halloween party books like the Bogie books and other interesting volumes. I saw these 2 recently up at eBay. The top book went for a pretty penny.

These kinds of party books provide a lot of great vintage ideas, games, and even plays and skits.

Vintage Style Decoratives at Hobby Lobby

I came home with this trio of vintage style items from Hobby Lobby. They also had some neat harlequin style pumpkins in orange/black along with a lot of party goods like napkins, favor boxes and such with similar designs. Other retro inspired items too.

The center pumpkin's hat comes off so you can hide treats and other spooky stuff inside.

Country Living Halloween - October 2010

The October issue of Country Living is now out and features some very neat witch cupcakes on the cover! The design is stamped onto rolled fondant. Clever! There's a feature on using fondant to create some nifty dessert accents.

Featured in this issue are the Martha Stewart Crafts Vampire Invitations which were carry in the store:

There's a really neat card-stock raven by Wendy Addison too that's available from Tinsel Trading.

I like the idea of creating Halloween shapes out of the paper doll technique. And the article on the pumpkins and the clever carvings is neat--I like the lighted haunted village pumpkins and the tree in the bookshelf crafted out of an array of pumpkins. And there are some clever crafts using crepe streamers!
