Several things to keep in mind:
1. Traditional pumpkins are a classic but consider gourds and squashes too for other effects.
2. Use battery operated tea-lights or strings of lights around a jar to avoid candles and wind blowing them out too.
3. If you don't like to get messy with pumpkin carving, you can always paint and decorate a pumpkin with spooky effects.
