Countdown to Halloween - Oct. 24th: Vintage Scarecrow Decorations

Scarecrows are everywhere it would seem--lots of them at the craft stores and I'm even seeing homemade ones using old clothes and straw for stuffing popping up around yards! I made a few of those as a kid.

If you like scarecrows, they do appear from time to time in vintage decorations such as the napkins above and the Gurley candle below:

Countdown to Halloween - Oct. 23rd: Vintage Halloween Displays

I love seeing vintage Halloween displays--especially at Halloween, but all year round there are collectors who keep up their displays or even relegate a whole room in the house to their collections. Click on each of these photos for a larger image.

A collector shared these photos of their display with us and I wanted to share with you all.

These games can be purchased fairly inexpensively at eBay compared to some of the other vintage Halloween collectibles if you're looking to start out with something that's not going to break your bank.

The lanterns are so bright and festive, shown in this photo.

And a Halloween feather tree is a great addition for all the Halloween ornaments in your collections.

If you're wondering where to find such great vintage items, check out eBay but also try a newer site, Bonanza! Your local antique malls are a great source too for vintage Halloween. If you're lucky enough to live near a holiday show like the one in Ohio every year, those are always fun haunts.

Countdown to Halloween - Oct. 22nd: Vintage Tally Cards #2

I really like the look of the vintage Tally cards. Here are some more festive examples of these.

I especially like the middle photo set and the lanterns pictured on the cat tally.

Love the Deco Silhouettes here...

Countdown to Halloween - Oct. 21st: Vintage Spider Decorations

Looking to spook your trick or treaters this Halloween with spiders? There were some vintage decorations that featured spiders or spiders within the images--but not many! In a recent search of eBay I found these diecut/tissue decorations...

Mildly creepy and cutesey at the same time--not my favorite.

Countdown to Halloween - Oct. 20th: Vintage Fortune Games

One of my favorite vintage Halloween collectibles is the games. Here are three examples of fortune games currently for sale at eBay.

Games were typically stunt and/or fortune games which were lots of fun!

Games at eBay depending on condition and style can range from 15.00 on up to hundreds of dollars. There's currently a neat Jack O' Lantern game going for over 400.00.

Countdown to Halloween - Oct. 19th: Vintage Tally Cards

Vintage Tally cards are so festive--nice and colorful and spooktacular imagery! Some of the really nice ones can sell for 30.00 and on up. Others you can get around 5.00 to 20.00. Some companies that made these include Gibson and Buzza--the Buzza ones are especially clever and a lot of them have that great Art Deco styling.

I really like this witch's cauldron bubbling over to the meowing/hissing cat.

Spooked by a bat?

Countdown to Halloween - Oct. 18th: Vintage Table Decor

The Halloween table should be festive! The above scene from an old Dennison Bogie book sports crepe, swag, cutouts, and favors. You can display vintage or make your own using vintage images--paper decorations are inexpensive to make and there are so many creative options. Often seals like these below from Dennison were used to decorate the table, cups, party favors and just about anything you could adhere them to for that spooktacular look.

Countdown to Halloween - Oct. 17th: Vintage Halloween Noisemakers at eBay #11

This noisemaker scene is one of my favorites that depict an old-time Halloween party! I especially like the traditional bobbing for apples game.

What a haggy witch! Some of these tambourines sell pretty high at eBay, especially ones intact with the all the parts. This same image also appeared on several other noisemaker styles.

Countdown to Halloween - Oct. 13th: Cat Decorations

Cat decorations are especially festive at Halloween. And they go so well with other themes--especially a witch theme. Here are some vintage collectibles seen recently on eBay like the plastic Rosbro item above.

Countdown to Halloween - Oct. 12th: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

One of my favorite stories set around Halloween at the climax of the tale is Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. From the autumn setting, to the spooky adventure involving bumbling Ichabod Crane and the mysterious headless horseman which leads to Crane's disappearance, it's a classic tale.

It's been told in different ways, retold for children, and been the subject of TV movies and big screen adaptations like the one staring Johnny Depp.

And it's even appeared as the theme of one episode of Scooby Doo:

A postal stamp was even issued some years back and can be found prevalently at eBay:

One of the earliest memories I have of this tale is the Disney movie version:

One of these days I'd love to go to the fall celebrations in Sleepy Hollow/Tarrytown area New York. This year, however, our theme for Halloween is Sleepy Hollow and the Headless Horseman--will post pictures at the Blog following Halloween.
